National Gun Violence Awareness Day
Be the Bridge to a World Without
Senseless Gun Violence!
June 2, 6-8 p.m. Continental Ave Pedestrian Bridge (Directions)
Meet on the west side of bridge at the intersection of Singleton Blvd and Gluden Lane.
Join your friends and neighbors, hear speakers, and enjoy a fun evening at
Off-Site Kitchen in Trinity Groves afterwards!
On January 21, 2013, Hadiya Pendleton – a majorette and high school honors student on the south side of Chicago – marched in President Obama’s 2nd inaugural parade. One week later, after finishing final exams, she was killed by gunfire in a schoolyard a mile from Obama’s Hyde Park home. Soon after this tragedy, Hadiya’s childhood friends asked their classmates to commemorate Hadiya’s life – and the lives of hundreds claimed by gun violence each year – by wearing orange, the color hunters wear to protect themselves and others. On June 2, 2015, what would have been Hadiya’s 18th birthday, over 200 organizations and influencers asked people nationwide to join them by wearing orange, and the WEAR ORANGE movement reached an incredible 220 million people in just one day.
This June 2nd Moms Demand Action will commemorate the 2nd Annual Gun Violence Awareness Day, asking people and communities nationwide to honor Hadiya’s life, her friends’ call to action, and the over 90 Americans killed and hundreds more injured every day by gun violence. By wearing orange, attending Wear Orange events, and sharing your participation on social media, you can be a bridge to ending senseless gun violence.
PLEASE JOIN US ON JUNE 2. www.wearorange.org Directions to the Continental Bridge

HIPPY Museum trip – the Perot – Science for preschoolers with parents
The HIPPY (Home Instruction for Parents of Preschool Youngsters, ages 3-5) is a structured, national program for training parents to serve effectively as their children’s first teachers. With the NCJW (National Council of Jewish Women) Dallas+HIPPY field trips program, youngsters and their parents are introduced to our major local museums. These popular trips combine fun with meaningful learning. This partnership program has been thriving for seventeen years.
Here are a few photos taken at the Perot Museum of Science and Nature, a popular enrichment destination. This HIPPY group is from the Richardson School District.

NCJW Volunteers for HIPPY Richardson field trip
150 members of HIPPY families attended this event. The NCJW Dallas-HIPPY field trip program is tightly integrated into the school district run HIPPY programs. For most of the families, this is their first exposure to such a museum. Volunteers enjoy participating in these events because the families clearly enjoy and appreciate the activity. Parents take initiative in presenting highlights to their children and sustaining good behavior.
This program is growing and flourishing. There are many volunteer opportunities. Join us!!

Doing Your Job

Religious Leaders support for #DoYourJob campaign
Advocates from National Council of Jewish Women Sections across the country have embarked upon an aggressive campaign to encourage the United States Senate to “do its job” and consider President Obama’s nomination for the Supreme Court. As part of the “Do Your Job” campaign, NCJW’s Texas State Public Affairs Co-Chair, Elaine Bernstein, met with Rabbi Elana Zelony of Congregation Beth Torah, in Richardson Texas. Rabbi Zelony, in turn, has signed letters to Senators Cruz and Cornyn asking them to do their job. Rabbi Zelony supports NCJW’s position that the Senate should do its constitutionally-mandated job. Please ask your religious leaders to sign similar letters in support of our “Do your Job” campaign.

“The American people expect that the Senate will do its job so that the judicial branch can carry out its duties. The Senate should fulfill its constitutional responsibility to ensure that the Supreme Court will function as the beacon of justice that our founders envisioned.”
“If Congress fails to act, the Supreme Court could go two terms — well over a year — with a vacancy.”
“As people of diverse faiths, we are inspired and informed by the pursuit of justice. We must do all we can to ensure that our nation’s highest court is fully functioning. If we fail to expeditiously advance the process of filling the current vacancy, we abdicate our responsibility to justly serve the dignity of all.”
Please let your Senators know that you want them to #DoYourJob. Tweet Senator Cornyn, .@johncornyn, Senator Cruz, .@sentedcruz. The dot before the @ sign assures that your tweet appears on their timeline.
