2024 PIONEERING PARTNER AWARD: REV. DR. GEORGE MASON

Rev. Dr. Mason is the Founder and President of Faith Commons, a nonprofit that promotes public discourse rooted in the common values of many faiths. Faith Commons aims to inspire more people to participate in public life with mutual respect, hospitality, and generosity.

George Mason is a Christian theologian and Baptist pastor in Dallas, Texas, where he served as Senior Pastor of the Wilshire Baptist Church from 1989 to 2022. He continues to direct the Pathways to Ministry program at the church, mentoring young clergy in congregational service.

Rev. Mason also serves as the Lead Advisor for the Baptist House of Studies at Perkins School of Theology (SMU), where he is an adjunct professor. He is a past convenor of Faith Forward Dallas and participates in numerous local and global ecumenical and interfaith endeavors. He is a contributor to The Dallas Morning News on subjects of public interest that intersect with religion, such as public education, racial justice, predatory lending, and climate change.

Rev. Dr. Mason echoes our mission and motivates others in our community to strive for social justice:

  • To affirm LGBTQ members of his church, he led his congregation to a split from the Baptist General Convention.
  • He led his church to accept deacons who were female or divorced.
  • Through his leadership of Faith Commons with Rabbi Nancy Kasten, he works tirelessly to bring people of different faiths together.
  • He works at the intersection of religion and faith with issues of community interest such as public education, social justice, equitable food distribution and race relations.
