This year, Greater Dallas Section is supporting the following projects. Opportunities to work with these projects vary.

 DAYTIME

Attitudes & Attire
Attitudes & Attire offers workshops on recognizing personal worth, presenting a positive image, overcoming barriers, and developing self-esteem and work ethics to economically disadvantaged women referred to this agency by over 100 local agencies. NCJW volunteers act as image consultants to help the clients select professional clothing and accessories for the workplace. Volunteer once a month for 2 – 2½ hours. Training provided by boutique manager.

CBI
Community Board Institute (CBI) is a non-profit management and leadership seminar for board members and agency staff of social service agencies and volunteer organizations. This one-day seminar held in April is planned and presented in cooperation with the Center for Nonprofit Management, Junior League, and United Way.

Hello Israel
Hello Israel is an educational enrichment program for fifth and sixth graders that supplements the regular social studies curriculum. It provides knowledge about Israel - its culture, people, history, geography, economy, and government, ancient and modern - and encourages friendships based on mutual understanding of diverse cultures. Volunteers bring this unique classroom experience to area students. Training is provided.

HIPPY - Home Instruction for Parents of Preschool Youngsters
HIPPY – Grand Prairie, Richardson, Irving, and Dallas ISD’s

HIPPY is a parent involvement and school readiness program for three, four, and five-year-old children. This home-based early intervention program trains parents to become their children's first and most influential teachers. Volunteers participate in cultural enrichment field trips to the DMA and assist in hands on art projects as well as special celebratory events for HIPPY families at the end of the school year.

HIPPY Carnival
NCJW will plan and execute an outdoor carnival for the graduating class of HIPPY students (5 yr. olds) and their parents to include age appropriate games, traveling cultural exhibits, sack lunches, and educational information such as library cards, immunization, and nutrition. This one-day event will be held on a weekday in late spring.

Immigration Conference
NCJW is convening a conference on immigration on February 21, 2008 with and for agencies in the Greater Dallas area that serve the immigrant population. Volunteers are needed to help plan the conference and to assist that day.

Making the Connection
This program educates mothers of very young children about the critical nature of a child’s earliest brain development. Both the educational booklet (which is in English and Spanish) and activity boxes used in the program were developed by NCJW. Volunteers are needed to present and expand the program and to develop an evaluation system. Training provided.

Meals on Wheels - Jewish Family Service & Visiting Nurses Association
Meals on Wheels provides a daily (Monday through Friday) hot, nutritious noontime meal and personal contact to disabled, ill, and frail homebound clients. Volunteers deliver meals through Visiting Nurse Association (1st and 4th weeks of the month) and Jewish Family Service (Kosher meals four times a year).

Morton H. Meyerson Symphony Center Docent Program
The Meyerson Symphony Center, opened in 1989, hosts the Dallas Symphony Orchestra and houses the Herman W. and Amelia H. Lay Family Concert Organ. Volunteer docents provide public and private tours of the Center. Training and docent manual provided.

Parkland Hospital Newborn Hearing Screening Program
Left undetected, hearing impairments in infants can negatively impact speech and language acquisition, academic achievement, and social and emotional development. When detected, these negative impacts can be diminished or eliminated through early intervention. Volunteers perform hearing screenings for newborns in Parkland’s Continuing Care Nursery. Volunteer once a week for 2 – 3 hours. Training and observation opportunities provided.

Safeguards for Seniors at Jewish Family Service
This project promotes the proper use of medications and safety in the home for older adults by providing information, education, and support. Volunteers assist individuals with a questionnaire about medicines, assist pharmacists at medication-screening reviews, and represent the program at health fairs. Screenings are conducted at senior centers throughout the city. Volunteers can make their own schedule. Days only. No children.

Trains at NorthPark - Ronald McDonald House
This is a model train exhibit that provides funding to help sustain the Ronald McDonald House of Dallas, a home-away-from home for families who have traveled to Dallas with their children for treatment in local hospitals. Volunteers staff the train exhibit on December 24 in NorthPark Shopping Mall. Children welcome with a parent.

Vickery Meadow Learning Center
Vickery Meadow Learning Center is an adult literacy program, dedicated to improving the communication and life skills of non-English speaking adults so they may function more productively in society. Volunteers teach English as a second language to Vickery Meadow adults one day a week for 2 hours. Training and curricula is provided.

 EVENING

Rainbow Room
Rainbow Room is an in-house resource center for Child Protective Services. Among its many services, it provides therapy for children and teenagers who have been sexually abused. NCJW volunteers make and pack peanut butter and jelly sandwich sack dinners for child clients who are attending these therapy sessions. Dinners are prepared on a Monday evening. Children of all ages welcome.

 WEEKEND

Kids in Court
KIDS IN COURT is a program to prepare children who are potential witnesses in felony child abuse cases. NCJW provides complete support of the supplies needed for this program. One Saturday morning a month, volunteers assist the District Attorney's office in making the courtroom and its procedures familiar to these children.

The items below may be brought to any NCJW meeting or to the office in the Preston Royal Shopping Center.

Donate-A-Phone
The national DONATE A PHONE® CALL TO PROTECT® campaign collects wireless phones to benefit victims of domestic violence. In the hands of a victim, these phones provide lifelines that enable them to call for assistance when faced with emergency situations. Wireless phones and accessories are needed. Phones do not need to be working. Phones are repaired and reprogrammed to provide domestic violence victims with a lifeline in an emergency.

COMMITTEES

Awards
This committee recommends individuals for local and national honors and awards.

By-Laws & Policies
Review the By-Laws & Policies governing the Greater Dallas Section of NCJW and recommend changes to the Board of Directors for approval.  

Communications
This committee is responsible for communicating NCJW programs and activities to the public through media access.

Financial Development
Come join the fun as a part of the committee planning this fall’s fundraiser. Included with the non-event will be a raffle and an eBay auction. Various skills needed and time commitment is flexible.

Grace L. Florence Tribute Fund
This restricted fund is designated to fund programs for the elderly. This committee researches needs in this area and makes recommendations to Research and Development.

Membership
Volunteers are needed to help recruit new members, plan friendly activities to tell people about NCJW, and serve as “buddies” to new members. Very flexible.

Minnie Hexter Milk Fund
This restricted fund is the only source of free whole milk and baby formula in Dallas County. This committee researches needs in this area and makes recommendations to Research and Development.

PACE
Public Affairs, Community Service, and Evaluation are the concerns of this committee, which evaluates ongoing projects and makes recommendations to the Board of Directors for approval. This committee meets between February and April, two or three times.

Programming
Volunteers are needed to help plan programs and study groups during the year. Two meetings, two luncheons, and several study groups a year—pick your interest and the time of year that is best for you!

Public Relations
Volunteers are needed to develop a PR brochure and video to promote the activities of the section to our members, the public, and corporations and businesses.

Reba M Wadel Scholarship Fund
This restricted fund is designated to fund scholarships to graduate students in the fields of early childhood development and social work. This committee works with the faculty of TWU and UTA to determine the recipients and makes recommendations to the Board of Directors based on their research.

Research & Development
This committee researches the unmet needs of the community with regard to the four areas identified in the Strategic Plan and develops advocacy and community service programs to meet the needs. Upon approval by the Board of Directors, the programs are implemented through the Board structure.

Rita O. Black Tribute Fund
This restricted fund is designated to fund programs to strengthen families. This committee researches needs in this area and makes recommendations to Research and Development.

SHARE Endowment Fund
This endowment fund is designated to fund social service and public affairs projects not covered in the annual budget. This committee hears requests from the Executive Committee and determines funding from the endowment.

Yad B’Yad
This restricted fund is designated to fund programs in Israel. This committee makes recommendations to the Board of Directors based on collaboration with the NCJW office in Israel.

Yearbook
This committee sells ads to defray the cost of printing the Yearbook, NCJW’s membership directory.
